"Do you know where I live?" "No." "Well, f*ck off then."

Layer Cake - There are only two "recognized" stars in this film - Colm Meaney and Daniel Craig. I suspect this movie is why Daniel Craig became the new James Bond. Daniel Craig is the narrator and protagonist. He is one of the middle men in a drug hierarchy. He is also, of course, trying to get out.

This movie is a depiction of the underbelly of the London drug gangster scene. Daniel has been successful and is ready to leave the business. His boss gives him two tasks - find the daughter of a friend and sell pills that turned out to be stolen from another drug dealer in Amsterdam. Both tasks are filled with peril.

It portrays both the dark and unpleasant aspects and the funny and appealing aspects as well. The director used an interesting technique of depicting dual scenes cutting back and forth where in one scene you are not quite sure what is going on. After watching the movie all I could think of was how it reminded me of both Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels but minus the humor of those films. Watching the behind the scenes vignettes (I think that is where it said) Layer Cake was the same director as the previously mentioned films.

It is noted that although many names are dropped: Clarkie, Duke, Slasher, Gazza, Morty, Gene, Jimmy Price, Charlotte, and Kinky. However, Daniel Craig's name is not revealed. Quite a feat because to be honest it isn't really noteworthy until the end. I liked this film. But then again I am a fan of the british gangster film. I reccommend this film if you enjoyed Snatch.
