Bio-pics galore!

Frances - Jessica Lange stars as an early 1930s actress. Frances Farmer. (Apparently, this is where she met Sam Shepard; her current love) Frances is a free and independent spirit. She rises as a star within the sphere of studio contracts and pictures.

She, however, longs to act in plays. She questions the details and everything about Hollywood life. Eventually, she escapes and joins a theater group on Broadway. She is in her element but is brought down and back to Hollywood by the people who made her a star.

She turns to alcohol to cope and eventually her anger at the life she has been forced to lead bubbles up and she has a number of altercations with the law. She ends up under the guardianship of her stage mother, who ends up putting her into a mental institution.

Sam Shepard is Frances' knight in shining armor. He is who she turns to when everything goes wrong with her life. He is the only constant.

Jessica Lange is awesome. She plays all the stages of Frances Farmer very well. She is engaging and captivating. While this movie is based on a true story - the life of Frances Farmer - it is not completely true to her life. Frances had a sister, not depicted in the film, that wrote a biography of Frances, that according to IMDB is as close to the truth as can be. While this movie is a little lengthy, Jessica Lange makes it a worthwhile view. It is a shame that such a bright and vibrant star was so tragically brought down because she resisted and was different.
