"Play with babies, you end up changing diapers..."

Y tu mama tambien - an interesting buddy film with a twist of "coming of age." I resisted seeing this movie for a while. I am the quintessential American. I resist sub titles. Not always but most times, I am lazy. The previous statements are a tad overblown there are a number of foreign films I have enjoyed but fims with subtitles are not what I tend to gravitate towards. I think this is a worthwhile film.

Two boys want to seduce the wife of one of the boys cousins. They are girlfriend-less - their ladies have gone to Europe for the summer. The boys are about to graduate and enter the world of college or life. This trip is a last hurrah for both boys. They are on a lark. They are as oblivious to the poverty, corruption, and disruption to their Mexican neighbors as they are to the mental state of their female companion.

I won't ruin this movie. I will encourage others to watch it. This isn't a great film but it is interesting and a great window into the world that is Mexico.

"Everybody cries when they get stabbed. There's no shame in that."

Slings and Arrows - while not a movie, is still excellent and worth a mention. This is a Canadian television show. Only six one hour episodes in the first season - which is all I have watched thus far. The characters are delightfully eccentric. Oliver, we meet in the first episode he runs the theater at the Burbidge Theater festival. His tenure is tragically cut short and Geoffrey Tennant a former protegee is brought in to take over the festival he deserted amidst a performance of Hamlet years before. Geoffrey is forced to work as a director with Ellen his former lover and current leading lady. Rachel McAdams also stars in this show as a cast member who has talent. She befriends Jack the movie star from Hollywood who has been brought in to bring a shot of life to the festival.

There is an underlying conspiracy by Richard Smith-Jones and Holly Day who are determined to alter the festival to make it into a huge money-maker. They want everyone to realize that the theater is a business. Musicals seem to be the way to go as they draw bigger crowds and they hope to make the board see the advantage of expanding the festival and changing it.

This show has many delightful twists and turns. It is funny and endearing. It reminds you of the other show imported from Britain - so much so that I keep expecting the actors to have British accents instead of Canadian ones. Rent this or watch it on the Sundance Channel before it goes away for good since the third season is its last.
