"He doesn't mind."

Sherlock Holmes - Robert Downey Junior, Jude Law, Rachel McAdams.

Sherlock Holmes tracks down a lord with ties to the dark arts. Lord Blackwood is a serial killer with a devoted following. Holmes between cases is a mess and is at a loss that Watson would want to abandon bachelorhood for marital bliss and employs several means to impede the pending nuptials. Although, Lord Blackwood is caught, tried and hung, he manages to rise from the dead. Holmes is on the case pulling a reluctant Watson after him.

I enjoyed this film, but I am a fan of Guy Ritchie. His movies blend violence and humor. Holmes is detestable, lovable, messy, and human. And yet he is still observant and tosses out hints along the way for those movie goers who also possess keen eyesight. This telling is more adventure than mystery and yet it still has the delightful wrap up of the whodunit resolution. See it in the theater because it is a fun escape, rent it if you are too busy living.

"I'm in transition"

Last Chance Harvey - Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman star.

Harvey is in London to celebrate his only daughter's wedding. His career seems on the verge of collapse. He exudes a subtle irritation by his mere presence. His ex-wife has moved on, remarried, and her new husband is all that Harvey is not.

Kate is a woman in her 40s who works as a statistician in the airport. She has a close relationship with her mother, semi-smothering but full of love connection. She is interested in finding love but is somewhat content with her lot in life.

The two eventually meet and Harvey realizes that Kate may be his last chance. She has not decided so swiftly that her life is in need of change.

This movie had many problems. But for once I can say I actually really liked the ending. The movie ended superbly. That rarely happens so I can't completely write the film off. I also can't quite place what I found so wrong with the film. The basic elements seem plausible/interesting. Perhaps there was enough back story or too much? I don't know. Catch this on tv.

It's been awhile

While my love of film has not waned apparently my addiction to posting has a little bit. Since 2010 is around the corner I resolve to post my passion. I have not stopped seeing film:

Fantastic Mr. Fox - excellent.
Coraline - excellent.
Julie & Julie - loved My life in France more than the blogger, but upon second view thought it was worthwhile too.
Where the Wild Things Are - terrific adaptation, lovely music, awesome pictorial, and well worth seeing in the theater even if it was rather loud at times.

Tv on Dvd:
Flight of the Conchords - love those crazy Kiwis. And yes, Bret I would have your baby.
True Blood - late comer to the party, but glad to have been invited in. I have my gripes with it but Jason Stackhouse you have won my heart with your idiotic ways and Tara you are too smart for your own good. Sigh. I have just finished Season One and now believe there may be a demon inside me.

More belated posts to come. I have not abandoned you completely. Promise.
